View Full Version : Illuminate your pannel

This was addresed on Sept 07, but I think it needs to be restated for any new people. Tom Anderson email address (lightkit@cinci.rr.com) phone # 513-398-2656 has come out with a replacement LED light for the Grimes Shoulder lights. Best $50 dollars I ever spent. Lights up the whole instrument pannel at night. Takes the Spooky out of night flying. Just a log book intry required. Takes about 20 minutes to install.

Is it adjustable as far as brightness or just off or on?

Thanks - Pat

They simply replace the bulb and lens in the shoulder lights. These lights are already on a dimmer switch. So yes, the brightness is adjustable.

I installed them in my Colt and I like them. This is a very simple and cost effective approach to improving the cockpit lighting in a shortwing.

Would these same bulbs work in the dome light?

12-21-2007, 09:25 PM
Hi Pat,
It is adjustable. Uses the same control as the other one.

Not sure if it will work in the dome light. Have not had mine apart. Gene

By shoulder lights are you referring to the red light that mounts up by your shoulder and illuminates the whole panel?

Yep, thats the shoulder lights. One above the Pilot's side window and one above the door on the passenger side.

I just received Tom's light kit for Christmas and what a wonderful difference! It took all of 10 minutes to replace the old bulbs with the new LED ones. Although the weather has not allowed me to try them in flight yet, I did see how they worked in a dark hangar. The difference is astounding! I can now see more of the instruments clearly. Before, it was difficult to see the VSI. I would definitely recommend them. Only "minor alteration" log book entry required.

Sorry for the poor grammar in my post above. Fired off the reply too quick. Good thing I did it in 2007 instead of starting 2008 with poor composition.

I have installed the LEDs in our Tri-Pacer, and with the dimmer, you can adjust the light level to whatever suits you. No problem seeing outside. The LEDs do make the dials, graduations, and pointers stand out much better than the old incandesant bulbs. I highly recommend the LEDs.

Where is the best place to find the shoulder light housings? Our Tri Pacer was missing them when we got her and I haven't had much luck finding any. I didn't see any in Univair's catalog but I did see ONE new one on ebay. I don't know for sure if I want just one of them when I am in need of two. I would rather buy a pair of them somewhere, so I figured this is the place to ask.

Since I replaced mine with the LED ones, I have two complete units with bulbs that I will be happy to give to a fellow shortwinger for postage. Send me an email with your address and I will send them to you. They are complete with all parts including the red lense. They do not include the bulb socket. It is the black housing that snaps over the bulb socket.

What part is the bulb socket?

09-13-2008, 07:21 AM
The bulb socket is the metal socket that the bulb fits in. That is the part that has the wires connected to it and s mounted to your headliner area. The part that is replaced with the LED system is the black plastic housing and adjustable lens that fits over the bulb that is inserted in the socket. The LED system comes with an LED bulb that fits in the socket and also a black plastic barrel that serves as a shroud over the LED bulb. The shroud snaps over the socket just like the old elbow unit did. Also, another member asked for the units I had so I shipped them to him yesterday.

I was needing the entire unit anyway so yours would not have worked for me. Where can I get some entire units?
